Action Agents and ActionFlows are not the same tool

Action Agents chase a goal with more freedom. ActionFlows follow a path you can inspect. ActionFlows AI ships both, and the names should stay distinct.

Freedom versus a defined path

People say agent and workflow as if they were synonyms. They are not. Both can use models. They structure the work differently, and ActionFlows AI has a surface for each.

Agents

An Action Agent is given a goal and more room to decide how to get there. In Agent Studio it can pick tools, loop, and invent intermediate steps. That is useful when you cannot honestly draw the path in advance.

The cost of that freedom is variance. Two sessions with the same goal can take different routes. Fine for exploration. Harder when a teammate needs the same result on Friday.

ActionFlows

An ActionFlow states the process up front. Steps, inputs, and outputs are explicit. You can inspect a run, edit one node, and rerun the same path. You give up some open-ended autonomy in exchange for control. For production work, that trade is often the point.

Where the product sits

The playground is the visual workflow surface. Agent Studio is the agent surface. You can put a strong model in either place. You should still know which contract you wanted: a goal with room to wander, or a path you can defend.

How to choose

  • Use an agent when the next step is genuinely unknown.
  • Use an ActionFlow when the job repeats, needs review, or must hit the same tools every time.
  • Many teams need both. Keep the names honest so people do not expect a canvas to improvise, or a chat agent to be a production pipeline.

If reliability, a visible trail, and reuse matter first, start with an ActionFlow. Add freedom inside a step if you need it. Do not pretend the whole job was a workflow if it was not.
